The motto "Manus Justa Nardus" translates as

"A just hand is a precious ointment".

Maynard is an ancient name which comes from the Germanic name Mainard which is composed of the elements "magin" meaning strength and "hard" meaning brave or strong. The name was popular among the Normons and it was brought to England after the Norman conquest of 1066.  There are lots of different spellings such as Mayneord, Mainard as well as Maynard. Much of this came from the fact that back in the 1700/1800's most prople could not read or write so when entries were made to records the scribes spelt the name however they thought fit.
